With its bright colors and poetic iconography, this more recent Asafo flag is a prime example how such flags can still inspire far removed from their original surroundings. The Fante considered birds as very special animals with strong spiritual powers. Their wings spread, the couple flies high above a leopard on a clear blue sky. While the leopard might be a very powerful predator, he can only look up while failing to catch the two birds – a clear reference to the proverb “You can not take the Asafo company by surprise”, signaling the power, preparedness and cohesion of the company who owned the present flag. The beautifully modeled birds’ togetherness is instilled by the subtle juxtaposition of their heads. The craftsmanship of the artist can also be witnessed in the skillful sewing of the leopard’s claws. The details of its face are made with the traditional chain technique. With its bright colors, this flags most likely dates just before or after Ghana’s independence. The Italian expert Federico Carmignani has suggested this flag could be attributed to the Kromantse workshop, and is probably a work by the flag maker Kobinah Badowah seen the refined quality of the birds and leopard. The facial features of the leopard are typical for the early productions of that workshop.
